What’s up, y’all!
If you’re reading this from the United States, I bet you’re cold right now. 😜 We’re nice and warm, and that is one of the reasons Paraguay made the cut on our list of countries to move to. We never want to be cold again! 🤣
We’ve had some fun-filled weeks since we last spoke. gnob even got to have some extra fun yesterday when the truck wouldn’t start. You know gnob, though, of course he had it running again before the end of the day.
At some point since you and I last spoke, we passed through Caacupé and I remembered to take a picture of the church that a million people made a pilgrimage to last month. Not exaggerating. Literally a million.
We made a pilgrimage of our own, to pick up a package from the US. The highlight turned out to be the grocery store where we picked it up. It was as big as a Wal-Mart or Costco! We have some more packages coming to that location, so we’re planning our next grocery shopping trip around it. The drive itself was not that noteworthy, though. That section of the country is pretty flat.
On our way home, we passed by a chipería, and there is nothing better than fresh, warm chipa, so of course I had three.
There was also a festival in town last weekend. One of the five largest festivals in the whole country, they say. There were over 7,000 people crammed into the futbol stadium for the concert featuring many bands. 7,000 people is 6,999 too many for us, so we wandered the street vendors outside of the stadium instead. The festival is held in honor of the 60 stripes poncho that they make here (as noted on the sign in the park).
I didn’t take any pictures, but last week I went to lunch with nine other ladies. I belong to a Telegram group of English-speaking foreigners located in the Cordillera Department (a department is kind of like a state in the US), and this was the first time I met any of them in person. I was the only person from the US, but also represented were Australia, New Zealand, Czech Republic, England, Romania, Finland, and Canada. It was a great time hanging out with other like-minded people. And it’s nice to have friends who’ve already jumped through the hoops here and can offer advice.
Okay, back to pictures!
Last weekend, we went and looked at two different properties, in two completely opposite locations. The first one had a very small lot, but a complete house with a pool, and a yard with fruit trees. There were no neighbors around, and it was very quiet, with great views.
The second house had a much bigger lot, full of mature trees, but the house would need to be completely renovated. It was located much farther out in the countryside, as you can tell by the road to get to it.
Ultimately, we decided against the second house, since it sits right on a highly trafficked road. We wanted to make an offer on the first house, with the condition that we could also purchase the empty lot right next to it. Sadly, we learned a few days later that the owner of that lot was about to begin construction on a house, so we’re back where we started.
I had a few other pictures to share, but Substack tells me this email is getting too long, so I’ll save them for next time. Long story short, we’re still loving it here. We love it especially this week, when there is no snow in sight! 🥶🤣

listening to:
have some Paraguayan music, and check out the chipa girls! Also, yes, that is what buses here really look like.
Are houses expensive there?
Hey Jessica,
10.5 inches of snow in southern Louisiana! Luckily Atlanta only got less that 1/2 inch. It is very cold here and I wish I was somewhere warm!
I guess you've heard that Ohio State won the national championship and Alabama wasn't even in the playoffs. Of course, neither was LSU!!
Take care of yourself and make sure you put on sunscreen!
