Stop what you're doin' and get back in line
Location: Gold Hill, Oregon
What’s up, y’all!
The countdown is on to our departure next week! Many things to get done in little time, so it’s been chaos around here, lol. We’ve been weighing our options for some time on what to do with our “stuff”. 🤔
One day, after this road trip is done, we’ll want to settle down somewhere again, whether it’s Costa Rica or Texas or Timbuktu (probably not Timbuktu), and we’ll need our stuff again. But the more we talked about it, the more we realized, “hey, it’s just stuff. We can always get more.”
So now we’re not keeping any of it, except what’s going in the truck with us. Side note: If you need something, just ask. You can have ours, if we haven’t given it away already!
gnob made a point during our discussion that really hit home for me. He said sometimes we put things into storage because they’re valuable. But every month, we have to pay storage fees, so technically we’re losing value on our investment.
Maybe it’s time to ask yourself: is that old couch you have in storage “just in case” really worth the cost you’re paying every month, or could you have already bought a brand new one for the amount you’ve spent storing it?
And hey, don’t be hard on yourself if you do the math and it doesn’t pencil out. Regret is a waste of energy. Instead, consider it a lesson learned, and then go sell that couch!
I suppose, though, we will keep a few things. My ribbons and medals from the Navy were hard-earned, and I’ll not part with them. I’m sure gnob has a few sentimental items, as well. But that handful of things can be put in a box in my sister’s attic. (Cause she just bought her first house, way to go, sis!)
Video of the Week
Road Trip to 2022 Overland Expo PNW
You know we’ve got road tripping on our minds right now. This video is from when we headed to Redmond, Oregon, for the PNW Overland Expo. We have a rule that when we go anywhere, at some point we have to take a road that we’ve never taken before. This trip was no exception. The Expo turned out to be kinda meh, but we saw some beautiful scenery along the way there and back, so it was worth it. 🌄
What We’ve Been Into
Since we’ve been getting rid of our stuff, here’s a couple of stories we read this week on the topic.
Charlie Brown always something good to share, and this week was no exception. Her story above about Marie Kondo contained a mind-boggling statistic: the average American household has 300,000 items, while in Europe, it’s only 10,000. Wow. We might be a bit attached to our stuff.
Here’s another article we read this week by an American nomad, Julie B. Rose, sharing what other countries have taught her about living with less. The important takeaway from this story is that you should open your house to us when we pass through your town! 🤣 Just kidding.
But for real, though.
Quote of the Week
That wraps up another week with Snale Racing! We’ll leave you with the quote that was most powerful for us this week. If you feel like this quote is about you, perhaps you should go take a long walk and think about it. Peace!✌
